The algebra course of license is at the heart of the mathematical training of the student, and constitutes for many a place of great happiness and for others a barrier which cannot be crossed without suffering. The subject, with limits not always very well defined, obviously covers linear algebra, the theory of groups, that of rings and bodies, and more generally the study of structures.
The effective aspect is nested here or there on the occasion of Gaussian reduction, Euclid’s algorithm or the study of symmetric polynomials … The applications spill over into branches other than those properly mathematical, in particular towards engineering sciences. This shows how important it is that the learning of algebra is done on solid foundations, and allows the student to face his subsequent training with confidence. The present work proposes to offer to its various readers assurance and delight at the same time, but also the promise to advance on firm and well marked out ground.
